ACC Board Publishes 2010 Cultural Week Schedule

February 12, 2010

The ACC board has made public the schedule for the Cameroonian Cultural Week for 2010. This year’s activities will take place from May 15th to 22nd in various parts of Montreal. Like in previous years, the highlights of this year’s events are the Cultural Festival and the Gala that take place on May 15th and 22nd respectively. These two events open and close the cultural week.

Cultural Festival
Our first festival last year clearly showed that this activity has a lot of potential for our community. This year’s festival aims to build on last year’s successes while improving on any shortcomings, especially by mobilizing more groups to perform. Like last year, the festival will take place at the gymnasium at Collège Notre-Dame, opposite the Oratory. In addition to traditional dances and choirs, it will also feature a dance competition for children and the first round of the Miss Cameroon Canada beauty pageant. Our partners have proposed fantastic prizes for these two competitions. Details on how to register for the Miss Cameroon Canada pageant are contained in a separate article in this issue. Parents can register their children for the dance competition by sending an e-mail to info@acc-cameroon.com, stating the child’s age and sex.

Soccer tournament

The soccer tournament will run over a two-week period and it is expected to bring together various Cameroonian teams in the city, plus guest teams from other African communities. Soccer matches will take place in soccer fields in LaSalle, St. Laurent, NDG and Côte-des-Neiges, with the final slated for May 16th at Kent Park. Teams willing to take part in the tournament can register by sending an e-mail to info@acc-cameroon.com. In addition, an exhibition match is slated for May 22nd at Kent Park, pitting Montreal against Toronto.

Conference and film projection
Good governance is the cornerstone for development. With this in mind, the cultural week also features a conference on a poignant topic: How can the Cameroonian diaspora in Canada contribute toward fostering good governance in Cameroon? The conference will be an opportunity for members of our community to discuss, debate and make concrete proposals toward better governance in Cameroon. The ACC board intends to forward pertinent proposals from this conference to the competent Cameroonian authorities. The evening will end with the screening of a Cameroonian movie.

Gala

On May 22nd, all roads within the Cameroonian community in Montreal will lead to the gala. This is the premier gathering of the community and no stone has been left unturned to ensure its success. To alleviate the congestion experienced at last year’s event and ensure that all guests have a seat, the ACC board has reserved a banquet hall with a 700-seat capacity. Efforts are also being deployed to ensure that each of the 700 stomachs has a good sampling of Cameroonian cuisine, as ndolé, koki, eru, roasted fish, DJ chicken, myondo, etc. are expected to feature prominently on the buffet. Like last year, the highlight of the evening will be the final round of the Miss Cameroon Canada 2010 beauty pageant. Tickets for this premier event will go on sale in early April. For the first time, it will be possible to purchase your tickets online at the ACC website (www.acc-cameroon.com).

The ACC board counts on the support of the entire community to ensure the success of this year’s cultural week. Details regarding the various activities will be communicated in due course.
